UNH Alumni Association Exceeds 50,000 Members

Ted Kennedy Jr. and Sen. Chris Murphy Address Graduates on May 20

In his Commencement address, Ted Kennedy Jr., a healthcare attorney and advocate for people with disabilities, told graduates that being able to overcome adversity will be the key to their success. "Change and unpredictably present rare opportunities to learn about yourself," he told more than 700 members of the Class of 2013 during the morning ceremony. "Possessing adaptability is just as important, if not more so, than raw intellect. It is only perfected when people are repeatedly faced with unexpected circumstances." Kennedy was speaking from experience. When he was 12, he was diagnosed with bone cancer, which led to the amputation of his right leg below the knee.

Meanwhile, Murphy said the last six months have been the most challenging he has faced during his nearly 10 years in public office. “I have seen awful things, but I have also been inspired to live a life full of more everyday acts of kindness than the one that I lived before Dec. 14.

Alumni Spotlight

Pamela S. Akins '81 MBA
Pamela Akins has one guiding motto: make it happen. So, when the only space she could find to launch her own marketing business in 1989 was a one room, former storage space in a third-floor walk-up, Akins was not deterred. She transformed it into Akins Marketing & Design and five years later moved her business from that third-floor walk-up to a stately Colonial-turned-Victorian structure. The charming “painted lady” building on a quiet street in New London, Connecticut, has been her trademark office since. Read more about Pamela's life and career and why UNH was the place for her.
