April 4, 2009: Attend the Gala
The stage is set for the 26th Annual Alumni Scholarship Ball to be held Saturday, April 4, in the David A. Beckerman Recreation Center. Join us for this gala affair, which helps to raise money for scholarships for worthy UNH students and honors four distinguished UNH alumni: Kenneth W. Biermacher, Esq. ’76 B.S., Heidi S. Douglas ’82 M.S., Joel S. Douglas ’82 M.S., and John R. Gehring ’52 A.S. The ball will also reintroduce the President’s Award, which is given to honor a University supporter who has gone above and beyond the call to help University students succeed. University Receives National Recognition
Exemplary civic efforts and community service has landed UNH on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for 2009. The honor roll is the highest federal recognition a school can receive for commitment to service learning and civic engagement. The University was one of only nine higher-education institutions in Connecticut to be named. Click here to read more about this honor.
Engineer-in-Residence Program Establish
The University recently announced the opening of the new Sikorsky Engineer-in-Residence program in the Tagliatela College of Engineering. The program, will be staffed with engineers from Sikorsky Aircraft and four engineering students selected to work as part-time employees throughout the semester. Read more about the program.
Business Students Take Global Honors
Ten University business students participated in a GLO-BUS business simulation exercise last month; four of the students earned global top 25 rankings. The co-managers of C Company, UNH students Lauren Massicotte '09 and Brandon Paguni '09, placed first with their overall game-to-date score. Their score of 112.0 was the best worldwide performance of the week. There were 256 teams from 18 different universities participating in the exercise. Students Honored at Theatre Festival
Seniors Emily Gorecki and Jessica Emerson recently were awarded the Barbizon Scenic Design Award at the Kennedy Center American College Regional Theatre Festival in Fitchburg, Mass., for their work during the production of "Two Rooms," staged at UNH in November 2008. They received an all-expense paid trip to the National Kennedy Theatre Festival in Washington, D.C. in April, where they will represent Region I - New England. March 11: "Why Are Universities So Funny?"
The University’s Friends of the Library will host a public lecture, "Why Are Universities So Funny?" with Dr. Michael Morris, UNH’s director of the Community Psychology program. On Wednesday, March 11 at 2 p.m. in the Marvin K. Peterson Library, he will offer a discussion about what makes a university such a hilarious organization, including topics such as "What students are thinking when they show up for class in bedroom slippers and pajama bottoms," and "How professors and administrators manage to transform themselves, on a moment's notice, into puffer fish experiencing a bloating frenzy." April 13-14: Chris Hanson, NBC's "Dateline-To Catch a Predator" To Speak at 18th Annual Markle Symposium
Chris Hanson, host of NBC’s "Dateline-To Catch a Predator," is scheduled to speak at the 18th Annual Markle Symposium set for April 13-14 at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort Casino. This year’s topic is Investigating International Crimes. Click here to see the list of other speakers and to register for the event.
